Saturn square Neptune: Shape Shifting, Letting Go and Manifestation

This week is undoubtedly dominated by the Saturn square Neptune signature, exact 26th November at 7 ° Sagittarius - Pisces. Not only that this astrological signature dominates 2016. As the Pluto and Uranus dynamic is still potent, this overlap between the transpersonal outer planets and the grounded Saturn, give us a real chance of grounding and working on what previously may have seemed only an impossible dream!
Work with it!

November 2015 begins a time of shape shifting, where dreams morph and reality seems uncertain. What’s real may be in question, and the structures or forms within your life may need to be tweaked.
Things you thought would last forever may slip from your grasp, while other dreams you never dared hope for may suddenly arrive. These changes and transitions between real life and the world of your imagination are triggered by the dynamic square angle between Saturn in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. This aspect defines the next 12 months. It’s the biggest aspect of 2015, and will influence us well into 2016.
Saturn in Sagittarius describes a new world view, and a more mobile vision of reality. Sagittarius is a malleable mutable sign, open to adventure and keen to explore new territory.
With Saturn in Sagittarius, new ideas about structure, safety and security will emerge. Regardless of how this manifests globally, you may notice rigid systems or expectations softening in your own life. You may realise you have more power to influence externally set obligations and routines than you’d thought.
Feeling, Flow and Meaning
Adding extra weight to this idea of a malleable Saturn is the touch of sensitising Neptune, which demands softness, compassion and consideration from Saturn throughout the square aspect.
Neptune helps create feeling and flow, and Saturn’s often dry, focussed and grounded ways can benefit from a more compassionate quality. Saturn in Sagittarius can help with matters of integrity and may highlight the need to walk your talk, but Neptune in Pisces reminds you not to be rigid in your dogma, but rather compassionate and all encompassing.
Over the years, I’ve seen transits between Saturn and Neptune lead to large and meaningful changes in the lives of clients. As these two planetary heavyweights join forces, you get the chance to rebalance the relationship between matter and form (Saturn) and imagination, inspiration and compassion (Neptune).
Perhaps you’ve been blind or indifferent to the suffering or pain in others and are now ready to devote more time and energy to helping or healing in general. Perhaps the fear of a lack of financial security has meant you’ve overlooked some of your more creative inklings in the pursuit of the next pay rise or a better job.
At heart, under this dynamic and stirring square, greater integrity is required. You may need to adjust the amount of time (Saturn) you devote to your many duties so that you have time to explore a creative outlet or simply to take time out and rest (Neptune).
Matter changes and forms shift as Neptune touches Saturn. Routines and obligations are not so set in stone, giving you the chance to add a little more heart, soul or kindness into your life. Giving back or making a contribution, especially when you have more than enough, may become important.
Saturn is the prime planet of manifestation, and one lovely potential as Saturn and Neptune work together is the opportunity to make real a long held dream or desire. Granted, Saturn can’t hold or manifest all the dreams of Neptune, but it can help you cherry pick a favourite dream or two and then work to make them real. This may show up in your career, your home life, with family or around relationships.
Neptune serves to soften the sometimes dry and rigid qualities of Saturn, so that there can be more time to play, daydream or pursue a passion project. The worldly ambitions of Saturn may be temporarily set aside to purse the inspirational dreams Neptune reveals.
Experiences or Achievement?
As both Saturn and Neptune are in fluid mutable signs, progress may occur in a meandering manner, rather than in a straight line. Breadth of experience and a wide variety of opportunities may appeal more than a straight shoot to the finish line. Make time for experience and to get off the beaten track. Take the detour or wander off the main path. A side road may not lead you anywhere, but the journey will teach or show you something.
The wisdom of experience is invaluable. During the Saturn square Neptune angle you may place greater value on life experience rather than achievement.
This dynamic square links two opposing principles – reality and dreams. There will be some tensions to work out – how will you make a dream come true? What will the cost be, emotionally, financially or in terms of time?
Experiences have their own value which may not be possible to measure in dollars, cents or hours. Part of the undercurrent to this aspect is to adjust your focus, and to learn to measure life’s ups and down through a different currency. Is it valuable to spend time with family even if it costs you money? Is it worth studying for the passion of learning, even if it sets you back in your career?
Only you can answer these questions, but you may be surprised by the value you place on experience or discovery during this aspect.
Quality of Life
A fluid and flexible approach may be your saving grace as Saturn squares Neptune. Don’t lock yourself in to rigid timeframes or expectations. Allow room to breathe in your schedule so that you have the space to follow a dream, should the desire arise.
We each have the chance to enrich our lives with new experiences, and visits to exotic, far flung or brand new places. Taking the time to truly live may be one lasting legacy of this potentially inspirational square.
Letting Go and Nourishing Mud
Sure, along the way things will end, fall apart or slip away. It can be hard to hold on as Neptune makes what’s been real, solid or enduring feel soft and ethereal, like trying to hold down a cloud.
So don’t hold to tightly to the past – forget tradition or past patterns and instead greet life with curiosity. Yes, you may experience sadness as cherished traditions or rituals end or change, but life is always changing right?
Changing circumstances and realities (that’s Saturn) mean new habits and rituals will be required. The mutable signs love of learning highlights curiosity as a great gift to help you navigate these changing times.
Be curious as to how else you might organise life, especially if you want to better balance obligation with the need to unwind. There will be a better, brighter way, but you may need a period of trial and error to find the most meaningful path for you.
Saturn = matter
Neptune = softness
During this square, matter and form soften creating the opportunity to re-form or re-shape life. If you have routines you have outgrown, let them go. Then, dream up a new rhythm for your life.
As you allow the old (Saturn) to be washed away (Neptune) you create a clean slate for new growth. And growth will be possible. Saturn is a dry, earth planet, while Neptune brings wetness and softness. Water and earth combine to make nourishing mud, which supports growth.
The Dam Bursts
An image for Saturn Neptune can be a dam bursting. A bursting dam brings a flood. In real terms the dam bursting can be a profound change in circumstances, perhaps with some loss involved. Initially, you may feel overwhelmed.
But after the flood, renewal is possible. The moisture softens and loosens long forgotten connections, opportunities and dreams. In loss lies opportunity, especially once you take a little time to let things flow and then dissipate.
Too much water – like a flood of feeling – is often a problem. If you experience some kind of flood or dam bursting event, you may need time to dry out afterwards, to recover your sense of equilibrium and find firm footing on new ground.
Allow this process the time it needs – in the end you’ll be rewarded with a more fulfilling and meaningful existence. Yes, a dream may disappoint you under Saturn/Neptune, but if so, it was a false dream and built on shaky foundations. Letting it go will allow you time and space to create a more sustainable and realistic version of your dream – and this one can last.
Practical Details
Saturn will square Neptune three times – November 2015, June 2016 and September 2016.
The aspect occurs between Saturn in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. The first hit, the opening salvo, when the more dramatic expressions of the aspect are likely, forms between 7 Sagittarius and 7 Pisces on November 26 – 27, 2015.
The second square, the reflection and adaption hit, when both Saturn and Neptune are retrograde, forms between 12 Sagittarius and 12 Pisces on June 17 – 18, 2016. The third and final square, when resolution, release and recovery are possible, forms between 10 Sagittarius and 10 Pisces on September 10, 2016.
If you have planets or chart points, like the Ascendant or MC, near those degrees, you will be especially sensitive to this configuration. But even if you don’t, this is the energy of the times in which we live and so you too will get a chance to make peace with a bursting dam, lie soft and mellow while life dries out and then embrace a new normal, where truth, integrity and hope play a larger role.
